Through the Archives: June 2021

Let’s now consider what happened in our District several years ago in June:

50 Years Ago - 1971

  • Rev. Hilliard Ranta, pastor of Faith-Kent accepted a call to serve as a missionary-teacher at the Hong Kong International School.
    Bethany-Wellington voted to sell their present church property and enter into a building program.
  • St. Paul-Napoleon honored Miss Edna Theel for 30 years of teaching in the parish school.
  • St. James-Archbold plans to commemorate their 125th anniversary on June 13 and 20, 1971. Their first pastor was Rev. Adam Detzer, 28, who became a “horseback preacher.”
  • Several Sunday School workshops were held in the District so teachers might examine the details of the new Sunday School program, “Mission: Life.”

40 Years Ago - 1981

  • The first National Assembly on Lutheran Social Ministry was held at the Cincinnati Marriott Hotel. Among the major presenters were Bishop Per Lonning of Norway, Secretary Richard Schweiker, Secretary of Health and Human Services, and Rev. Jesse Jackson, of Operation Push, as well as LCMS President J.A.O. Preus.
  • Cleveland Brown’s coach, Sam Rutigliano spoke at the annual Have-A-Heart Dinner at Stouffers in Cleveland. This was sponsored by the Friends of Lutheran Children’s Aid Society. In his speech, Coach Rutigliano pledged that the Browns would beat Pittsburgh this year along with the Bengals.
  • Hope-Portage Lakes celebrated the 30th year of their founding. Rev. Paul E. Kolch, the first pastor at Hope, gave the sermon.
  • Our Redeemer-Huntington, WV, dedicated its new church building. Pastor Peter Reetz thanked the Church Extension Fund as well as the LWML for all their help with the new building.

25 Years Ago - 1996

  • Rev. Ronald Bergen, Pastor of Faith-Kent, became the 7th District President for the Ohio District as outgoing President David Buegler accepted a call to St. Paul-Westlake. Since First Vice President, Peter Reetz, Pastor of Zion-Columbus, declined to become President, according to the Code of Regulations, Rev. Bergen became President. Accordingly, Rev. Kent Wendorf then became 3rd Vice President and Rev. Paul Hoffman became District Secretary.
  • The District program PROMPT, the District partnership with LCMS World Missions, extended its work to Puerto Rico for another 7 years.
    Immanuel-Hamilton hosted special events as a celebration of their 100th Anniversary.
  • Zion-Akron presented a special gift to missionaries to Dale and Lucile Busse who served for more than 60 years as missionary teachers in Papua New Guinea.

10 Years Ago - 2011

  • Lutheran Hour Ministries presented a special show called, “The Bible on Trial.” It will air throughout the country on June 18 and July 18.
  • Concordia Plan began its first national survey in which it can determine the opinion of church workers concerning insurance disability and retirement programs.
  • Rev. Chris Eldridge was installed as Associate Pastor at Prince of Peace-Columbus.

5 Years Ago - 2016

  • The 70th Lutheran Laymen’s League Men's Weekend Retreat “The Seasons of a Man’s Life” will be held at Pioneer Camp and Retreat Center in New York State.
  • The Concordia Seminary Summer Workshop called “Decoding the Apocalypse: Study of the Book of Revelation” will be offered at St. James-Cleveland, August 10-12,
